HISTORY Located approximately 30 miles to the east of Valmy, Winnemucca hosts an area population of 40,000 and is the seat of government for Humboldt County. The modern-day wild-west town is an activity hub that dates back to 1830 when beaver trappers first settled along what was then called Mary’s River. During the westward migration, wagon trains soon began stopping at the Mary’s River Trading Post. Later it was renamed Frenchman’s Ford. In 1863 the bustling trading post was renamed for the last time as Winnemucca in honor of the principal Paiute Chief of the region. |

Winnemucca hosts the PRCA and NHSRA Circuit rodeos, the ACTRA and USTRC Ropers competitions, and varying horse shows nearly every weekend. It also hosts the Winnemucca Fair and Stampede, Run-a-Mucca motorcycle run, Mule Races, Show & Draft Horse Challenge, and auto races at the Winnemucca Regional Raceway for the car fan. |

While you’re in town you can’t miss seeing the Buckaroo Hall of Fame containing memorabilia of Winnemucca’s early history. Exhibits and collections include traditional working gear, paintings, drawings and sculptures; or the Interpretive Historic Museum, the Humboldt County Museum local craft shows, the county fair, livestock auctions, golfing, and rodeos. For your every day needs, Winnemucca is full of supermarkets, hardware stores, restaurants, schools, a hospital, and even a Super Wal-Mart. |
