Ruby Mountains

Around Valmy the outdoor recreation activities are in endless supply, spearheaded by the Majestic Ruby Mountains to the east.  Referred to as Nevada’s Swiss Alps, the Ruby Mountains (www.rubymountains.com) are an easy drive east and boast some of the best local hiking, fishing, hunting, and general outdoors experiences you’ll find in the West.

Stretching over 90 miles in length and a dozen miles wide, the Ruby Mountain Wilderness offers the outdoorsman a virtual paradise of options with some twenty-five named lakes and just as many smaller unnamed lakes, ponds, and streams.  Fishing is open year round for various species of trout, primarily cutthroat, brook and mackinaw, with a spattering of rainbow, golden, and tiger

With the highest peaks in the 10,000 to 11,000 foot range, the Ruby Mountains are an excellent location for skiing, ice fishing, or snowmobiling.  For the extreme winter sports fanatic, the Ruby Mountains even offer helicopter skiing (www.helicopterskiing.com).

For those who want to ski a little slower – Snobowl Ski Resort is about 3 ½ hours from Klondike and open weekends and holidays, January through Mid-March.  Get information at (www.nevadadventures.com).

For the climbers, you can tame your rugged adventurous spirit with a day climb at some of the easily accessible but seldom scaled walls all over the Ruby Range.
